CODE's Distill Phase: Your Ultimate Guide to Efficient Learning 📝🔍
Learn how to Distill your ideas into action using the CODE Methodology
Welcome to our four-part series on the CODE methodology developed by productivity expert Tiago Forte, where we explore the four steps to building a Second Brain using this methodology.
In the first article, we discussed the importance of “capturing” to never forget a brilliant idea again
In the second article, we learned how to get organized like a pro using the P.A.R.A. method
In the third article we learned how to Distill your ideas into action using the CODE Methodology
In the final article we shared the step where you take the distilled insights and turn them into something tangible and actionable: Express.
Today at a glance:
A Second Brain is a personal knowledge management (PKM) system created by productivity expert Tiago Forte. It is designed to help you free up your brain’s resources by storing digital notes, ideas, to-dos, and projects in an “external digital brain”.
It consists of 4 steps: C.O.D.E. (Capture, Organize, Distill, Express)
The third phase “Distill” is all about taking the information you've collected and processing it into actionable insights.
A Framework:
Have you ever found yourself with an abundance of information but struggling to make sense of it all? You're not alone!
In our modern age, we are constantly bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information from various sources. The key to making this information useful is by distilling it.
So what exactly does the Distill phase entail?
Distilling is the process of taking raw information and turning it into something useful and actionable. It involves extracting the most valuable insights, identifying patterns and connections, and transforming this information into something that can be applied in your daily life.
This step is where you begin to transform your notes and ideas into something more meaningful and valuable.
One of the key tools used in the Distill phase is Progressive Summarization: A technique developed by Tiago Forte, the creator of the CODE Methodology.
It involves highlighting the most important information from a source, and then progressively summarizing the information at multiple levels of detail!
Layer 0 is the original, full-length source text.
Layer 1 is created by importing relevant passages, copy-pasted from the original source.
Layer 2 is the first round of true summarization, in which you bold only the best parts of the passages imported.
Layer 3 is created by highlighting something if it is a truly unique or valuable idea.
Layer 4 is an informal executive summary at the top of the note, restating the key points in your own words.

One of the biggest challenges of the Distill phase is avoiding information overload. With so much information available, it can be easy to get bogged down in the details and lose sight of the big picture.
To avoid this, it's important to stay focused on your goals and objectives and use your Second Brain and other tools to filter out information that isn't relevant.
Here are some tips to help you master the distillation process:
Start with a clear goal
Before you begin the distillation process, it's essential to have a clear goal in mind. Ask yourself: What do I want to get out of this information? What problem am I trying to solve?
Identify the most valuable insights
The next step is to identify the most valuable insights from the information you've collected. This involves looking for patterns, connections, and key takeaways.
Summarize the information
This involves condensing the information into a concise and easy-to-understand format. You can use Progressive Summarization, bullet points, diagrams, or mind maps to help you visualize the information.
By mastering the distillation process, we can make better decisions, solve problems, and improve our productivity.
So start distilling today and take your Second Brain to the next level!
Now that we have covered the first three phases of the CODE Methodology, it is time to turn our attention to the final stage: Express.
In this phase, we focus on turning our ideas and insights into concrete actions and outcomes. Express is where we take everything we have learned and synthesize it into a coherent plan for moving forward.
So let's dive into the final stage of the CODE Methodology next week!
A Notion tool
I build a compilation of the most effective distilling methods out there such as the Cornell Method, Feynman Technique, Outline Method, Boxing Method, and more…
The best of all is it includes a ready-to-use template of the Progressive Summarization Technique.
