The best way to gain Clarity And Direction in your Life: Horizon of Focus.
A productivity framework and a Notion template
Your time is limited. Wouldn't it be nice to always know that you are using it optimally, working on what really matters?
Last week I found out about this key tool for achieving such clarity! It helps you get your life goals and work in line so that you can focus on execution without worrying. In this post, we explore a framework from the Getting Things Done methodology, called Horizon of Focus.
What is Horizon of Focus? The short answer: It is a framework to align your daily actions with your long-term goals and life purpose.
Each horizon represents a certain level of perspective. These levels cover the whole range of your life vision, from a high level as Life Purpose & Principles, all the way down to Daily Actions.
Here are the details of each horizon introduced in Getting Things Done Horizon of Focus:
Purpose and principles. The “big picture”. What is your life purpose? What drives you? What inspires you? Why do you do what you do?
3-5 year vision. Where do you want to be 3 to 5 years from now? Any long-term (+5 years) visions/outcomes? This is where to put your end goals. No mean or intermediate goals. The 5 Why´s method helps a lot to get from a mean goal to an end goal.
1-2 year Objectives. How will your job or your project look in the next 12 months? What do you need to achieve this year to get you closer to your end goals? Here you need to make specific and measurable goals.
Areas of focus. What really matters now in my life? Am I dedicating the necessary energy to it? Are my current systems and habits aligned with my long-term goals? If not, what adjustments can be made?
Projects - Anything that takes more than one next action to complete. Most people have between 3 to 5 projects. These are the current projects and projects that will start within the current year. It is important to also list desired outcomes/results that you want to achieve within the current year.
Next actions. The ground floor. The next step you need to follow in order to start the transformation of your reality. This level is where the Weekly Reviews and Task Management tools come up.
Defining each of these horizons will help you to prioritize daily actions and align them to your end goals. More importantly, it may lead you to discard commitments that you don't care about very much. This will free up time for the projects and activities that really have an impact on your life vision.
